Formed in 1997 by taiko player Ian Cleworth and shakuhachi flute dai-shihan (grand master) Riley Lee, TaikOz has established itself as one of Australia's most energetic and exciting drumming groups.
Combining the power of the traditional Japanese taiko with the ethereal tones of the bamboo shakuhachi, TaikOz seeks to explore a synthesis of East and West, old and new. The collective Japanese training of the group - with the legendary Sado-Ondekoza, Eitetsu Hayashi and Amano Sen - is reflected in the eclectic repertoire of TaikOz.
Drawing from ancient traditions while looking to the future, TaikOz performs such dynamic compositions as the traditional Yataibayashi, the wildly contemporary Monochrome as well as pieces from within the group. Using a vast array of beautiful handcrafted instruments, such as the 250kg Grand Drum and yokobue flute, TAIKOZ is an innovative voice in world music.
Like waves in the ocean and thunder in the distance, the sound of TaikOz is elemental: the force of its resonance enveloping players and audience alike, drawing each and all into its voluminous embrace; seeking to excite, stimulate, energize.
With ancient practice at its core, TaikOz combines tradition with the latest Australian and Japanese compositions. Combining the visceral power of the Japanese taiko with the ethereal tones of Riley Lee’s bamboo shakuhachi, TaikOz seeks to explore a synthesis of East and West, old and new.
