The sounds of jazz has infiltrated the Melbourne music scene. Festivals, alley ways and new venues catering specifically for the brass tones have shaken the sleeping giant of sound. Keyboardist and producer of the New Impromptu Quartet, Alexander Nettelback knows this only too well. "The jazz festivals are really starting to happen. We are seeing some great smaller venues spring up that are suited to a more intimate listening experience and at the same time allow for the dynamics of the instruments to come through." Perhaps surprisingly, it's not only straight jazz that has emerged. There's a disctinctive cross over of styles where music, dance style and the sound art scene fuze. Made up of members from around the world, the New Impromptu Quatet is revelling in the emergence of this new musical wave.
