From an eager teen taping turntabilism shows from underground radio, to a DJ of world standing, the last five years have seen DJ Perplex – aka Ollie Winter - soar. Since moving to Melbourne the DJ with “hands of fury and wrists of rubber” (Beat Magazine 24/10/07) has thrice triumphed at the Australian DMC Championship and landed an impressive ninth spot in the prestigious World finals in London in 2007. A fast learner with his heart in Hip Hop, Perplex started experimenting with a mate’s DJ equipment at sixteen. Inspired by Australian pioneers J-Red and Selekt, the thrill of cutting it up live had the aspiring musician hooked. Just four years later Perplex entered the 2004 Victorian DMC heat and took out the title. Fuelled by the taste of victory, Perplex dedicated his efforts to the art; developing routines that saw him convincingly claim a three-peat of DMC titles in 2006,2007 and 2008. With an aim to harness turntabilism’s complex technicality and make it accessible to the crowds, Perplex is a dynamic and engaging addition to the local and international scenes. Striving to marry battle skills with party rocking beats, his sets are tight and flowing – mixing up funky sonics, with dark atmospheric undercurrents.

Forever in search of a groove and bassline that will get a strong reaction, Perplex’s latest endeavours involve a lot of digging for soul and funk records to complement electro influences and his old favourite, hip hop beats. The result is a genre-bridging mash-up style that is as original in its delivery as it is eclectic. Already an established name in Melbourne’s thriving club scene, Perplex regularly dishes up innovative performances both solo and alongside DJ Smitten as the party rock’n DJ duo Cutting Room Floor. The pair’s show incorporating 4 dex and 2 mixers has already proven a massive fan favourite, with the duo selected to play the Big Day Out in 2007. On the solo front, Perplex has supported the likes of Cypress Hill, Diplo, Common, Spank Rock, Chromeo, High Contrast, Lyrics Born, Mir Lif and Cage, Hot Chip, People Under The Stairs, Katalyst, DJ Z Trip and Cash Money, as well as playing a string of acclaimed shows in Europe following in ‘’07/08". Recent projects include the ‘DJ Knows’ mixtape. Perplex’s first licensed mix is a collaboration with TDK who are distributing 10,000 copies thoughout Australia, New Zeeland and Asia. Another is his brand new mix series entitled 'Digital Killed the Vinyl Star', which just dropped recently and showcases his current bouncey dance floor friendly sound.

Emerging local rapper Ivens, utilised the DJ’s razor sharp cuts on his critically acclaimed album of 2007 ‘Sounds to Expire to’. Perplex’s incredible skill has seen him teach classes at the United DJ Mixing School and DMC DJ school, whilst his ever growing popularity has demanded ongoing appearances on Channel 31’s ‘Heavyweight TV’, ABC’s Spicks’n’Specks and most recently Channel 10’s Video Hits. Exceptionally gifted and always impressive, there’s an undeniable sense that the sky’s the limit for DJ Perplex who is still just 25 years old. Already representing Australia to the fullest, Perplex will continue to command attention on both local and international stages as he continues to inspire with his diverse skills and unique rocking sound.
